Beyond Mersin: our other Turkish ports

Mersin is the lane we run most and it remains the right choice for most buyers, particularly anyone moving vehicles onward to northern Iraq. But it is not the only way into Türkiye, and for some cargo it is not the cheapest or the fastest. Here is the rest of what we can do.

Roll-on roll-off into İzmir, Gemlik and Autoport Gölcük

These three are dedicated vehicle terminals rather than general container ports, and they exist because Türkiye moves a very large number of cars by sea. On roll-on roll-off the vehicle is driven aboard under its own power and secured on a vehicle deck, with no container involved at all.

İzmir is the Aegean gateway, serving western Türkiye and the İzmir industrial region. Gemlik sits on the Marmara close to Bursa, the heart of the Turkish automotive industry. Autoport Gölcük is in Kocaeli, again in the automotive belt, and is purpose-built for vehicle handling.

RoRo is usually cheaper per unit than a container when you are shipping a single running vehicle. What it will not take is a non-runner, because the car has to drive on. It also gives less protection than a sealed container, since the vehicle sits on an open or semi-open deck for the crossing alongside hundreds of others.

Container into Istanbul Ambarlı

Ambarlı is the main container gateway for Istanbul and the Marmara region, which is the largest consumer market in the country. If your cargo is general freight, machinery, spare parts or trade goods rather than a single car, Ambarlı is often the sensible discharge point simply because of where the buyers are.

Trucks, machinery and general cargo

The Mersin content above is written around cars because that is what most of our clients on this lane move. We also ship trucks and commercial vehicles, including tractor units and box trucks, used construction machinery bought at Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet and Purple Wave, and general containerised cargo of every ordinary kind. Machinery goes containerised where it fits, on flat-rack where it does not, and by heavy haulage for the largest pieces, with dismantling and securing handled by us.

Which should you choose?

Tell us the vehicle or cargo, where it sits in the USA, and the Turkish city it is going to. We price the realistic options against each other rather than pushing whichever is easiest for us to book. As a rough guide: one running car to western Türkiye often suits RoRo, three or four cars anywhere suits a container, machinery depends entirely on its dimensions, and anything heading toward Iraq goes through Mersin.

Konteyner ile İstanbul Ambarlı. Ambarlı, İstanbul ve Marmara bölgesinin ana konteyner limanıdır. Genel yük, makine, yedek parça ve ticari mal için uygundur.
