We ship used construction machinery, trucks, industrial equipment and general containerised cargo from anywhere in the USA to Dar es Salaam. Nationwide collection, loading at our own warehouse, US export filing handled, and a real price back in 24 to 48 hours.
Dar es Salaam and the corridor behind it
Dar es Salaam
Tanzania's principal seaport and one of the busiest on the East African coast.
The central corridor
Overland to Zambia, the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Malawi. Arranged at that end.
Tanga and Mtwara
Smaller ports handling regional and project cargo, with less frequent service.
Machinery, trucks, cargo
Construction plant, commercial vehicles and general containerised freight.
Straight answer on cars
Tanzania drives on the left, so left-hand-drive American cars are a poor fit for the domestic market. What moves well on this lane is used construction machinery, trucks, plant and general cargo, driven by construction, mining and the regional trade behind the port.
We would rather say that plainly than take a booking that becomes your problem at the port.
Inspection happens in America
Tanzania requires pre-shipment inspection of imported goods, carried out in the United States before the cargo sails, with a certificate travelling with the shipment. It cannot be arranged once the container has left, so it has to be planned into the booking rather than handled later.
Cargo arriving without the required certificate faces problems that are expensive and slow to resolve. This is the most avoidable failure on the lane.

We are the carrier. Cassandra Logistics is federally licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission under OTI No. 025125NF, and the bill of lading is issued in our own name.
We collect from anywhere in the USA and load at our own warehouse, where cargo is secured and photographed before the doors close.
We file the US export declaration so the American side is clean before the vessel sails and your clearing agent has a consistent document set.
What is the best way to ship machinery from the USA to Tanzania?
In a container to Dar es Salaam where the machine fits, on flat-rack or by heavy haulage where it does not, booked with the licensed carrier rather than a forwarder. Cassandra Logistics is FMC-licensed under OTI No. 025125NF and issues the bill of lading in its own name. Get a price in 24 to 48 hours.
Who ships cargo from the USA to Dar es Salaam?
We do, as a licensed US NVOCC. We collect from any state, load and secure at our own warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Baltimore, file the US export declaration and ship to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's principal seaport.
Can I ship an American car to Tanzania?
Rarely worth it. Tanzania drives on the left, so a left-hand-drive American car is a poor fit for the domestic market. Machinery, trucks, plant and general cargo are a different story and move well on this lane, driven by construction, mining and the regional trade.
Can I ship an excavator or loader to Tanzania?
Yes. Used construction machinery is the strongest cargo here. Many mini and midi excavators fit a 40ft container once the boom and arm come off, and larger machines travel on flat-rack or by heavy haulage. Send the make and model and we will price the cheapest method.
Can I ship trucks and commercial vehicles?
Yes. Tractor units, tippers and commercial vehicles move by container where they fit and by flat-rack where they do not. Import eligibility is assessed separately from passenger cars, so confirm it with your clearing agent before you buy rather than after the cargo sails.
Do you carry general commercial cargo?
Yes. Full container freight from any US origin, including industrial goods, building materials, spare parts and trade goods. Tell us the commodity, weight and volume and we will price it the same way we would a machine.
Can you collect cargo from anywhere in the USA?
Yes. Nationwide collection from any state, whether the cargo is at an auction site, a factory, a dealer or a private seller. Machinery collection uses different equipment from vehicle towing, so tell us the weight and dimensions and we will send the right truck.
Does cargo have to be inspected before it ships to Tanzania?
Tanzania requires pre-shipment inspection of imported goods, carried out in the United States before the cargo sails, with a certificate travelling with the shipment. It cannot be arranged after the container has left, so it is planned into the booking from the start.
What happens if the inspection certificate is missing?
Cargo arriving without the required certificate faces problems at the port that are expensive and slow to resolve. This is the most avoidable failure on the lane, and it is avoided simply by planning the inspection before booking rather than discovering it afterwards.
Does equipment need cleaning before it ships?
Agricultural and earth-moving equipment is commonly subject to cleanliness requirements because of pest and disease controls. Steam cleaning before loading costs very little against the risk of a machine being held at the port for cleaning at your expense.
Can I ship to Dar es Salaam and move the cargo to Zambia or the DRC?
Yes, and it is a major established route. The central corridor carries cargo overland from Dar es Salaam to Zambia, the DRC, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda and Malawi. We deliver to the port and the overland leg is arranged by you or your clearing agent. See the East Africa guide.
Why is Dar es Salaam busier than Tanzania alone would explain?
Because most of what lands there does not stay. The central corridor feeds six neighbouring countries, several of them landlocked, so the port handles regional volumes rather than domestic ones. That also means the trade around it is experienced and well organised.
Is transit cargo documented differently?
Yes. Cargo passing through Tanzania toward another country is treated as transit rather than a Tanzanian import, with its own documentation. Name the final destination country to us and your agent at the outset, because a container declared wrongly is expensive and slow to re-declare.
Dar es Salaam or Mombasa, which should I use?
It usually follows the inland destination. Dar es Salaam serves the central corridor toward Zambia, the DRC and Malawi. Mombasa serves the northern corridor toward Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan. Both reach Rwanda and Burundi, so there the routing and schedule decide. See the Kenya guide.
How much does it cost to ship a container from the USA to Dar es Salaam?
It depends on the US origin, the container size and the commodity. Because we are the NVOCC rather than a reseller, the number is the carrier rate. Send us the cargo and the two locations for a firm figure. Request a quote
What does your price include?
Collection from the US seller, transport to our warehouse, loading and securing, the US export filing, and the ocean freight to Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian duties, taxes, port handling, your clearing agent's fee and any inland leg sit outside it and are paid at that end.
Why are other quotes cheaper?
Often because they exclude the pre-shipment inspection, or the collection, loading or export filing, or because they are broker prices that get revised once the booking is real. Ask what is excluded and who issues the bill of lading. What drives the cost.
What is the cheapest way to move equipment to Tanzania?
Get it into a container if it will fit, even if that means removing the boom, bucket or cab. Containerised rates are generally lower than flat-rack, and the dismantling cost is usually far less than the freight difference. We assess each machine rather than assuming.
Will my machine need dismantling?
Often. Booms, arms, buckets, cabs and counterweights come off and travel in the same container, documented so the machine can be rebuilt at destination. Everything removed is photographed and labelled, so whoever reassembles it is not guessing.
Will I see the cargo before the container is sealed?
Yes. We photograph the cargo when it reaches our warehouse and again once it is loaded and secured, before the doors close. That record also supports a claim if anything goes wrong in transit, which is why we do it as standard.
Can I ship spare parts with the machine?
Yes, and it is usually the efficient thing to do, since parts travel far more cheaply alongside the machine than shipped separately later. Everything must be listed on the export filing, so send us the full inventory rather than adding items on loading day.
How quickly can I get a price?
Within 24 to 48 hours in normal cases. Send the cargo details including the machine model where applicable, the dimensions and weight, the US location, and whether the cargo stays in Tanzania or moves onward through the central corridor.
What happens after I accept your quote?
We arrange collection, bring the cargo to our warehouse, photograph it, book the container, load and secure it, arrange dismantling and inspection where needed, file the US export declaration and send you the bill of lading. Your clearing agent takes it from Dar es Salaam.
Are you a licensed shipping line or a middleman?
We are the NVOCC. Cassandra Logistics is a federally licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary under FMC licence OTI No. 025125NF, legally Royal Port Container Lines, Inc. The number is public and verifiable with the Federal Maritime Commission before you send anyone money.
Import rules change. The customs information on this page comes from official government sources and was accurate when published, but duties, age limits and eligibility requirements are set by the destination country and can change without notice. Cassandra Logistics is a licensed ocean carrier, not a customs authority or a legal adviser. We are not responsible for changes to foreign import law, or for decisions made by customs at destination. Always confirm current requirements with a licensed customs agent in the destination country before you buy a vehicle.
