Ship a car or container from the USA to Bolivia - cheap direct-NVOCC rates

Bolivia is landlocked, so cargo arrives through the northern Chilean ports. Direct FMC-licensed NVOCC for the ocean leg, no broker markup, nationwide vehicle pickup and towing across the USA, real quote in 24 to 48 hours.

Bolivia has no coastline, so every imported vehicle arrives through somebody else's port. In practice that means the northern Chilean ports, and it means the vehicle spends part of its journey under a different country's rules before it reaches yours. Cassandra Logistics runs the ocean leg from the USA into that corridor as a direct NVOCC, which is the part where most of the cost and most of the mistakes live.

Bolivia allows used vehicle imports, with conditions

Unlike several of its neighbours, Bolivia does not ban used vehicles outright. Bolivian Customs sets out the technical and environmental conditions under Decreto Supremo No. 28963 and its modifications together with Decreto Supremo No. 3244. It defines vehiculos antiguos as motor vehicles, used or unused, whose model year corresponds to a period before the current one, and vehiculos nuevos as those whose model year corresponds to the current period or the following one.

Used vehicles in the antiguos category must present the prior environmental authorization under the EURO standard issued by the Viceministerio de Transportes, plus environmental certification covering exhaust emissions and control of ozone-depleting substances. New vehicles require the EURO prior authorization as well.

Bolivian Customs also notes that where the month of manufacture cannot be identified, the manufacturing period running from 1 July of one year to 30 June of the next is used, with the later year recorded as the model year. That detail decides which side of an age line a vehicle falls on, so it is worth knowing before you bid.

An advantage American cars have here: Bolivian Customs requires that vehicles built with right-hand drive undergo steering conversion in a national Industrial Free Zone. US vehicles are left-hand drive, so they skip that step entirely. Against Japanese right-hand-drive stock, that is one less process, one less cost, and one less delay.

How cargo reaches Bolivia from the USA

Main gateway

Iquique, Chile

The most common ocean gateway for Bolivia-bound cargo from the USA, and the free zone through which a large share of Bolivian imports pass.

Alternative

Arica, Chile

The northern Chilean port closest to the Bolivian border corridor, and a normal routing option depending on schedule and cargo.

Onward leg

Port to Bolivia

Inland transport from the Chilean port into Bolivia is arranged by the buyer or their customs agent. We deliver to the port of discharge.

Common cargo

What we ship

Auction-won cars, SUVs and pickup trucks, used construction machinery, and full-container consolidations of multiple vehicles.

Auction cars from the USA to Bolivia

Bolivian buyers source heavily from US vehicle auctions. We export vehicles won at Copart, IAA, Manheim, and eBay Motors, collecting them straight from the yard with our nationwide vehicle pickup and towing service and loading them at our warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston, or Baltimore. Read the full auction car export guide.

Before you bid, confirm the model year and emissions position with your Bolivian despachante de aduana. The EURO authorization is a destination requirement and it is checked at nationalization, not at the port of loading. We can move any vehicle you buy, but we would rather you buy one that clears cleanly.

Heavy equipment to Bolivia

Used American machinery from Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet, and Purple Wave moves into Bolivia through the same corridor. Excavators, loaders and dozers ship containerized, on flat-rack, or by heavy haulage depending on dimensions, with dismantling and securing handled where required. Read the equipment export guide.

Why booking direct with an NVOCC is cheaper

Bolivia-bound shipments pass through more hands than most, which is exactly why broker markup hurts here. A broker takes a rate from an NVOCC or ocean carrier, adds margin, and hands it on. Cassandra Logistics is the NVOCC, federally licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission under OTI No. 025125NF. You deal with the carrier for the ocean leg instead of paying an intermediary to forward your email.

How the process works

Cost and cheapest route
What is the cheapest way to ship a car from the USA to Bolivia?

Book the ocean leg directly with a licensed NVOCC rather than through a freight broker, and fill the container. Cassandra Logistics is FMC-licensed under OTI No. 025125NF, so the rate you get is the carrier rate. Consolidating three or four vehicles into one 40ft container is the other major saving, because ocean freight is charged on the box. Get a free quote in 24 to 48 hours.

How much does it cost to ship a container from the USA to Bolivia?

It depends on the US origin, the container size, whether pickup and towing are needed, and which Chilean gateway port you use. Remember that a Bolivia quote and an Iquique quote are not the same thing, because the inland leg from the port into Bolivia is separate. We quote the ocean leg precisely and tell you plainly where our part ends.

Is it cheaper to route Bolivian cargo through Iquique or Arica?

It varies with the sailing schedule, the carrier, and where in Bolivia the cargo is ultimately going. Neither port is automatically cheaper. We price both against your actual shipment and tell you which one wins for that booking rather than defaulting to one out of habit.

Why are some online quotes for shipping to Bolivia cheaper than yours?

Usually because they are broker quotes that move once the booking is real, or because they quote only the ocean leg while implying door delivery, or they leave out pickup, loading, or export filing. Ask any cheaper quote in writing exactly what is included and where their liability ends.

How much does nationwide vehicle pickup and towing add?

It depends on the distance from the auction yard or seller to our loading warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston, or Baltimore. A vehicle bought near one of those warehouses positions far more cheaply than one bought across the country. The cost is built into your quote so there is no surprise later.

Is it cheaper to ship one car or fill a container?

Filling it, by a wide margin per vehicle. The ocean freight is charged on the container rather than per car, so each additional vehicle spreads the same cost further. Buyers who purchase regularly at auction should time purchases so several ship together.

Routing to a landlocked country
Bolivia is landlocked, so which port do I ship to?

The northern Chilean ports are the standard gateway, principally Iquique and Arica. Your cargo arrives there by sea and continues into Bolivia overland. We are the ocean carrier for the sea leg from the USA to that port.

Who handles the leg from the Chilean port into Bolivia?

The buyer or their customs agent arranges it. We deliver to the port of discharge and hand over the bill of lading and documentation. We are direct about this because exporters who blur the line here are the ones whose customers get stranded costs they did not expect.

Can you deliver to La Paz, Santa Cruz, or Cochabamba?

Our service ends at the port of discharge. Inland delivery into Bolivian cities is arranged by your agent on the ground, who is also the person handling your nationalization. Tell us your final destination anyway, because it affects which gateway port makes the most sense.

Does cargo pass through a Chilean free zone on the way to Bolivia?

It commonly does, since Iquique's free zone handles a large volume of goods destined onward to Bolivia. How your specific cargo is treated in transit is a matter for your customs agent. Our responsibility is delivering the container to the port cleanly and on time. See our Iquique guide.

Auction cars from the USA
Can I ship a Copart or IAA auction car from the USA to Bolivia?

Yes. We collect the vehicle directly from the Copart, IAA, Manheim, or eBay Motors yard anywhere in the USA with our nationwide vehicle pickup and towing service, load it at our warehouse, and ship it to your Chilean gateway port for onward movement into Bolivia.

Do you collect the vehicle directly from the auction yard?

Yes. Nationwide vehicle pickup and towing from any US state is part of the service. That matters on this lane because auction storage fees accumulate quickly and moving the car off the yard promptly is often the first real saving in the whole shipment.

What if the auction has not released the title yet?

The vehicle cannot be exported until the title or equivalent ownership document is available, since US export filing requires it. We can collect and hold the car at our warehouse while the title clears, which stops auction storage charges from building. Flag it early and we plan around it.

Can I ship a salvage-title vehicle to Bolivia?

We move salvage and rebuilt vehicles regularly from the US auction market. Whether a given vehicle clears at destination is decided by Bolivian requirements, including the environmental authorizations, and by your despachante. Confirm the position before you bid, because a vehicle that cannot be nationalized is far more expensive than one you did not buy.

Containers and saving money
How many cars fit in a 40ft container to Bolivia?

Usually three or four depending on the vehicles. Sedans and compact SUVs load more efficiently than full-size pickup trucks. We confirm the loading plan once we know the exact units, and each additional vehicle lowers the cost per car.

Can I share a container with another Bolivian buyer?

Yes, consolidation is available. It splits the container cost between shipments instead of paying for unused space. The timing of both purchases has to align, so tell us early if you intend to consolidate.

Is a 20ft container worth it for a single vehicle?

Often yes for one car, since the smaller box costs less and a single vehicle does not need the length. From two vehicles upward the 40ft normally wins on cost per unit. We price both options against your cargo.

Can I ship spare parts or personal effects in the container with the vehicle?

Sometimes, but everything must be declared on the export filing and it changes the treatment at destination. Undeclared items packed inside vehicles are one of the most common causes of clearance delays anywhere in the region. Tell us what is going in and we file it properly.

Heavy equipment
Can I ship an excavator or loader from the USA to Bolivia?

Yes. Used American construction machinery moves into Bolivia through the northern Chilean corridor. Depending on size and weight we ship containerized, on flat-rack, or by heavy haulage, and we handle dismantling and securing where the dimensions require it.

Do you ship Ritchie Bros. or IronPlanet machinery to Bolivia?

Yes. Machinery bought at Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet, and Purple Wave is regular work for us. We arrange collection from the auction site anywhere in the USA and prepare the machine for ocean transit. Read the equipment guide.

Does machinery have to be dismantled to fit a container?

It depends on the unit. Smaller excavators and loaders often fit a 40ft container once the boom or arm is removed, while larger machines travel on flat-rack or by heavy haulage. We assess the specific machine and quote the cheapest safe method for it.

Bolivian import rules
Does Bolivia allow the import of used vehicles?

Yes, subject to conditions. Bolivian Customs sets the technical and environmental requirements under Decreto Supremo No. 28963 and its modifications together with Decreto Supremo No. 3244. Used vehicles fall into the category Bolivian Customs calls vehiculos antiguos and carry additional environmental requirements compared with new ones.

What counts as a new vehicle and what counts as an old one in Bolivia?

Bolivian Customs defines vehiculos nuevos as motor vehicles whose model year corresponds to the current period or the following one, and vehiculos antiguos as motor vehicles, used or unused, whose model year corresponds to a period before the current one. Note that a vehicle can be unused and still fall into the antiguos category purely on model year.

What is the EURO authorization Bolivia requires?

Bolivian Customs states that both new and old vehicles require prior environmental authorization under the EURO standard issued by the Viceministerio de Transportes. Vehicles in the antiguos category additionally require environmental certification covering exhaust gas emissions and control of substances harmful to the ozone layer. Your customs agent obtains these at destination.

Do American cars need steering conversion for Bolivia?

No, and this is a genuine advantage. Bolivian Customs requires that vehicles manufactured with right-hand drive undergo steering reconditioning in a national Industrial Free Zone. American vehicles are left-hand drive from the factory, so they skip that requirement, which saves the buyer a process, a cost, and a delay.

Timing and process
How long does it take to ship a car from the USA to Bolivia?

The ocean leg to the Chilean gateway port depends on the US loading port, the carrier's schedule, and any transshipment. The overland leg into Bolivia is additional and is arranged by your agent. We give you a concrete timeline for our portion with the quote.

How quickly will I get a quote?

Within 24 to 48 hours in normal cases. Give us the cargo details, the US pickup location, and your gateway port preference. Including the VIN or machine model lets us price more tightly. Request a quote

What US export paperwork do you handle?

We handle the US side, including the filing in the Automated Export System (AES/EEI). You provide the title or auction certificate and the bill of sale. Bolivian import duties, environmental authorizations, and nationalization are handled at destination by your despachante de aduana.

About Cassandra Logistics
Are you a licensed NVOCC or a freight broker?

We are the NVOCC. Cassandra Logistics is a federally licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary under FMC license OTI No. 025125NF, legally Royal Port Container Lines, Inc. DBA Cassandra Logistics. The license number is public and verifiable with the Federal Maritime Commission before you send anyone money.

How do I know my cargo is really booked?

You receive a bill of lading issued by us as carrier, showing the vessel and booking. That is a transport document rather than a forwarding confirmation. On a multi-leg route like Bolivia's, knowing exactly who is responsible for which leg is the single most useful thing you can establish before shipping.

Import rules change. The customs information on this page comes from official government sources and was accurate when published, but duties, age limits and eligibility requirements are set by the destination country and can change without notice. Cassandra Logistics is a licensed ocean carrier, not a customs authority or a legal adviser. We are not responsible for changes to foreign import law, or for decisions made by customs at destination. Always confirm current requirements with a licensed customs agent in the destination country before you buy a vehicle.
