We ship cars, trucks, used construction machinery and general containerised cargo from anywhere in the USA to Slovenia. Nationwide collection, loading at our own warehouse, US export filing handled, and a real price back in 24 to 48 hours.
Koper and what it handles
Koper
Slovenia's only commercial port, and the shortest sea route from the Mediterranean into central Europe.
Largest in the Mediterranean
A dedicated car and roll-on roll-off terminal with six berths, five ramps and space for tens of thousands of vehicles.
Over a million boxes a year
The container terminal handled more than 1.1 million TEU in 2024, with regular rail links to central and eastern Europe.
Slovenia drives on the right
American left hand drive vehicles suit the road configuration directly, with no steering conversion needed.
What we move to Slovenia
Cars and pickups from Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors, three or four to a 40ft container so the freight splits across them. Trucks and commercial vehicles. Used construction machinery from Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet and Purple Wave. And general containerised cargo, including building materials, industrial goods, trade goods and spare parts.
American left hand drive vehicles suit Slovenian roads directly, so there is no conversion cost or delay of the kind that affects right hand drive stock from other source markets.
Why Koper is a serious vehicle port
Koper is easy to underestimate from a map. It is Slovenia's only commercial port and it is small on the coastline, but it operates twelve specialised terminals and its car and roll-on roll-off terminal is the largest in the Mediterranean, handling vehicles from more than twenty manufacturers. In 2024 it moved roughly 885,000 vehicles and more than 1.1 million containers.
The container terminal carries almost 700 metres of quay, a maximum draft of 14.5 metres and five berths, with regular rail services to the major commercial centres of central and eastern Europe. The car terminal adds vehicle services on site, including inspection and fitting of additional equipment.
For a buyer this matters in a practical way. A port that handles vehicles by the hundred thousand treats a container of cars as ordinary work rather than an exception.
Where cargo goes after Koper
Koper markets itself on being the shortest route from the Mediterranean into central Europe, and its own published hinterland covers Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Italy, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania and beyond. Cargo arriving at Koper routinely leaves by rail rather than by road.
If your cargo is heading to Austria or Poland, those corridors are usually served better through the North Sea container hubs, and we cover that route separately. See the central Europe corridor page. If it is heading into Croatia or the western Balkans, Rijeka can be the better call. See the Croatia page.
Tell us the final town when you ask for the quote. We would rather route your cargo through the right port than through the one that happens to be on this page.
Slovenian vehicle tax and conformity
Slovenia charges a motor vehicle tax calculated from the vehicle's sales value excluding VAT, with the rate set by the type of vehicle, the fuel, the carbon dioxide figure and the emission standard. For used vehicles the amount payable is a published percentage of the calculated tax that steps down with age, falling to roughly a third once a vehicle is more than ten years old.
Vehicles that hold Slovenian classic vehicle status are exempt from that tax. The status is granted under the Slovenian motor vehicle regulations rather than claimed on the strength of a build year, so confirm it with your agent before you buy a car on the assumption that it qualifies.
Separately, a vehicle cannot be registered in Slovenia without a certificate of conformity, which for an American car means going through an accredited inspection body rather than presenting a US document. As the ocean carrier we will not quote you a Slovenian tax figure or rule on classic status, because those belong to the Slovenian financial administration and to your agent.

We are the carrier. Cassandra Logistics is federally licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission under OTI No. 025125NF, and the bill of lading is issued in our own name rather than by a broker reselling somebody else's space.
We collect from anywhere in the USA, including non-runners, and load at our own warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Baltimore, where cargo is braced and photographed before the doors close.
We file the US export declaration, so the American side is clean before the vessel sails and your agent has a consistent document set. See what the US filing involves.
What is the best way to ship a car from the USA to Slovenia?
In a container to Koper, booked with the licensed carrier rather than a broker. A container protects the vehicle and lets three or four share one box so the freight splits across them. Cassandra Logistics is FMC-licensed under OTI No. 025125NF and issues the bill of lading in its own name. Get a price in 24 to 48 hours.
Who ships cars from the USA to Koper?
We do, as a licensed US NVOCC. We collect from any state, load and brace the vehicles at our own warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Baltimore, file the US export declaration and ship to Koper.
Can I ship a car I bought at a US auction to Slovenia?
Yes. We collect directly from Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors yards anywhere in the United States, bring the vehicle to our warehouse and ship it to Koper. You never need to travel to the States for any of it.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the USA to Slovenia?
It depends on where the vehicle sits in the States and how many vehicles share the container. Because we are the NVOCC rather than a reseller, the number is the carrier rate rather than a broker markup. Send us the vehicle and the pickup location for a firm figure.
How long does shipping from the USA to Koper take?
Koper is an Adriatic port, so routings commonly transship through a Mediterranean hub rather than running direct. The sailing schedule therefore matters as much as the loading port. We give you a concrete timeline with the quote rather than a generic range.
Can I put three or four cars in one container to Slovenia?
Yes, and it is the biggest single saving available on this lane. Ocean freight is charged on the container rather than per vehicle, so filling a 40ft box drops the cost per car sharply. Tell us the exact vehicles and we will confirm the loading plan.
How big is the car terminal at Koper?
It is the largest dedicated car terminal in the Mediterranean. Six berths, five roll-on roll-off ramps, over 840 metres of operational quay and storage for tens of thousands of vehicles, handling cars from more than twenty manufacturers. Around 885,000 vehicles moved through it in 2024.
Is there an age limit on importing a car into Slovenia from the USA?
Slovenia applies no maximum age to an imported used car. Age changes the vehicle tax rather than eligibility, and the tax payable on a used car steps down with age, falling to roughly a third of the calculated amount once the vehicle is over ten years old.
What is the Slovenian motor vehicle tax?
A tax calculated from the vehicle sales value excluding VAT, with the rate set by the vehicle type, the fuel, the carbon dioxide figure and the emission standard. For used vehicles only a published percentage of the calculated tax is payable, and that percentage falls as the vehicle gets older.
Why does Slovenia feel more expensive than other EU countries on tax?
Because of how the base is built. Slovenia calculates import VAT on the customs value plus duty plus the motor vehicle tax, so the vehicle tax sits inside the VAT base rather than beside it and the two compound. On a cheap car it is minor. On an expensive one it is noticeable. Ask your agent to show the calculation on your specific vehicle.
Are classic cars exempt from the Slovenian vehicle tax?
Vehicles holding Slovenian classic vehicle status are exempt from the motor vehicle tax. That status is granted under the Slovenian motor vehicle regulations rather than claimed on build year alone, so confirm your specific vehicle with your agent before you buy it expecting the exemption.
Does my American car need a conformity certificate in Slovenia?
Yes. A vehicle cannot be registered in Slovenia without a certificate of conformity, and for an American car that means going through an accredited inspection body rather than presenting a US document. Factor the time and cost in before you bid.
Are American left hand drive cars suitable for Slovenia?
Yes. Slovenia drives on the right, so American vehicles suit the road configuration directly with no steering conversion. That removes a real cost and delay carried by right hand drive stock from other source markets.
Can I ship machinery and construction plant to Slovenia?
Yes. Excavators, loaders, telehandlers and plant move on this lane. Depending on dimensions we ship containerised, on flat-rack or by heavy haulage, with dismantling and securing where the size requires it. Send the model number so we confirm dimensions rather than estimate them.
Do you carry general commercial cargo to Slovenia?
Yes. Full container freight from any US origin, including building materials, industrial goods, machinery parts and trade goods. Tell us the commodity, weight and volume and we will price it the same way we price a vehicle shipment.
Can cargo landing at Koper move on to Hungary, Slovakia or Czechia?
Yes, and that is a large part of what the port exists for. Koper runs regular rail services into the commercial centres of central and eastern Europe, and its published hinterland includes Hungary, Slovakia, Czechia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Romania. Your receiving agent arranges the onward leg.
Should I use Koper or a North Sea port for cargo going to Austria or Poland?
For Austria and Poland the North Sea container hubs usually work better, and we cover that route on a separate page. Koper earns its place for Slovenia itself and for the countries south and east of it. Tell us the final town and we will route it honestly rather than toward this page.
Can you collect a vehicle anywhere in the USA for a Slovenia shipment?
Yes. Nationwide pickup and towing from any state, whether the vehicle sits at an auction yard, a dealer or a private seller. Non-runners are winched rather than driven. Distance affects the cost of collection, not whether we can do it.
Which US ports do you load from for Slovenia?
Our warehouses in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston and Baltimore all serve Mediterranean sailings, with East Coast departures most common on this lane. Routings into the Adriatic usually transship, so the schedule matters as much as the loading point.
Do you handle customs clearance in Slovenia?
No. Clearance is handled by a licensed customs agent in Slovenia. We are the ocean carrier, we deliver to Koper, and we provide the documentation your agent needs. Be wary of any company claiming to clear customs in every country, because it cannot.
What US export paperwork applies on a Slovenia shipment?
We handle the US side, including the filing in the Automated Export System. You provide the title or equivalent ownership document and the bill of sale. A vehicle cannot leave the United States without its title, and there is no workaround. See the AES filing guide.
What is included in your Slovenia price?
Collection from the US seller, transport to our warehouse, loading and bracing, the US export filing, and the ocean freight to Koper. Slovenian duty, VAT, the motor vehicle tax, the conformity certificate, port handling, your agent fee and inland delivery are paid at that end.
Why are other quotes to Slovenia cheaper?
Usually because they exclude collection, loading or the export filing, or because they are broker prices that get revised once the booking becomes real. Ask what is excluded and ask who issues the bill of lading. See what actually drives the cost.
Can you hold my cars at your warehouse until I have a full container for Slovenia?
Yes. We can hold vehicles while you win others, then load them together in one container. Auction yards charge daily storage and our warehouse does not, so waiting for the right load usually saves money rather than costing it.
How do you secure a vehicle for the crossing to Slovenia?
Loaded on its own wheels, chocked, strapped at the wheels or suspension rather than over the bodywork, and blocked so it cannot shift at sea. Where the straps attach is what separates a careful load from a damaged car.
Will I get photographs before my Slovenia container is sealed?
Yes. We photograph the vehicle when it reaches our warehouse and again once it is loaded and braced, before the doors close. That record also supports a claim if anything goes wrong in transit, which is why we do it as standard.
Can I load spare parts or personal items inside a car going to Koper?
Only if they are declared on the export filing. Undeclared goods inside vehicles are a common cause of clearance problems, and the consequence falls on the importer rather than on the carrier. Send us the list when you book.
Do you deliver inland in Slovenia?
Our service ends at the port of discharge. Inland delivery is arranged by your clearing agent, who is already handling clearance. Tell us the final town anyway, since it decides whether Koper is genuinely the right port for your cargo.
How fast can you quote a Slovenia shipment?
Within 24 to 48 hours in normal cases. Send the vehicle details including the VIN and where it sits in the United States. For machinery send the model number so we can confirm dimensions rather than estimating them.
What happens once I confirm a Slovenia booking?
We arrange collection, bring the cargo to our warehouse, photograph it, book the container, load and brace it, file the US export declaration and send you the bill of lading. Your Slovenian clearing agent takes over from the port of discharge.
Are you a licensed carrier on the Slovenia lane or a middleman?
We are the NVOCC. Cassandra Logistics is a federally licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary under FMC licence OTI No. 025125NF, legally Royal Port Container Lines, Inc. The licence number is public and verifiable with the Federal Maritime Commission before you send anyone money.
Import rules change. The customs information on this page comes from official government sources and was accurate when published, but duties, age limits and eligibility requirements are set by the destination country and can change without notice. Cassandra Logistics is a licensed ocean carrier, not a customs authority or a legal adviser. We are not responsible for changes to foreign import law, or for decisions made by customs at destination. Always confirm current requirements with a licensed customs agent in the destination country before you buy a vehicle.
