We ship cars, trucks, used construction machinery and general containerised cargo from anywhere in the USA to Croatia. Nationwide collection, loading at our own warehouse, US export filing handled, and a real price back in 24 to 48 hours.
Croatian ports we serve
Rijeka
Croatia's principal container port on the Adriatic, and the country's deep water door to the sea.
Adriatic Gate and Rijeka Gateway
The established Adriatic Gate container terminal in the Susak basin, joined by the new Rijeka Gateway terminal which opened in late 2025.
Croatia drives on the right
American left hand drive vehicles suit the road configuration directly, with no steering conversion needed.
Cars, machinery, cargo
Auction and dealer vehicles, construction plant, commercial goods and general containerised freight.
What we move to Croatia
Cars and pickups from Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors, three or four to a 40ft container so the freight splits across them. Trucks and commercial vehicles. Used construction machinery from Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet and Purple Wave. And general containerised cargo, including building materials, industrial goods, trade goods and spare parts.
American left hand drive vehicles suit Croatian roads directly, which removes the conversion cost and delay that affects right hand drive stock arriving from other source markets.
Rijeka and where the cargo goes next
Rijeka is Croatia's deep water port and its main container gateway. The established container operation is the Adriatic Gate terminal in the Susak basin, and a second terminal, Rijeka Gateway, took its first commercial vessel in September 2025 and opened formally that October. More capacity on the same quay is good news for schedule reliability on a lane that used to be thin.
Rijeka sits on three of the European Union's core transport corridors, including the Mediterranean corridor and, since the 2024 revision, the Western Balkans to Eastern Mediterranean corridor. In practical terms that is why cargo landing at Rijeka moves inland by road and rail rather than stopping at the coast.
If your cargo is not staying in Croatia, say so when you ask for the quote. Where the cargo finally stops changes which port is the sensible one, and sometimes the answer is not Rijeka at all.
Homologation, and why US cars need it
A vehicle built for the American market carries no EU whole vehicle type approval. Croatia deals with that through a national approval route: the State Office for Metrology reviews the documentation and issues the approval, the Centre for Vehicles of Croatia inspects the vehicle and issues the conformity certificate, and the work is completed at an authorised inspection station.
The published guidance is blunt that modification is normally required. Lighting is the usual item, because American position lamps, indicators, brake lights, rear fog lamps, reversing lamps and reflectors are not built to European requirements. Instruments, mirrors and a noise test can also come into it depending on the vehicle.
None of that stops the car being imported. It is a cost and a timeline, and the buyers who get caught out are the ones who learn about it after the container has already landed.
Croatian vehicle tax and the fifteen day return
Croatia charges a special tax on motor vehicles that is assessed from carbon dioxide emissions, the vehicle's selling price, engine power in kilowatts, engine displacement and the emission standard. For a used vehicle the amount payable is the residual rather than the full figure, reduced by how much the model has depreciated on the Croatian market.
The timing is the part worth knowing. That tax is not assessed on the customs declaration. It is a separate return filed at the customs office within fifteen days of the vehicle entering Croatia, and the vehicle cannot be registered until the resulting decision is marked paid.
Vehicles made thirty or more years ago and classified as oldtimers under the Croatian scheme are outside the special tax entirely, but the classification has to be evidenced rather than assumed. As the ocean carrier we will not give you a Croatian tax figure or rule on oldtimer status, because that belongs to the Croatian customs administration and to your agent.

We are the carrier. Cassandra Logistics is federally licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission under OTI No. 025125NF, and the bill of lading is issued in our own name rather than by a broker reselling somebody else's space.
We collect from anywhere in the USA, including non-runners, and load at our own warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Baltimore, where cargo is braced and photographed before the doors close.
We file the US export declaration, so the American side is clean before the vessel sails and your agent has a consistent document set. See what the US filing involves.
What is the best way to ship a car from the USA to Croatia?
In a container to Rijeka, booked with the licensed carrier rather than a broker. A container protects the vehicle and lets three or four share one box so the freight splits across them. Cassandra Logistics is FMC-licensed under OTI No. 025125NF and issues the bill of lading in its own name. Get a price in 24 to 48 hours.
Who ships cars from the USA to Rijeka?
We do, as a licensed US NVOCC. We collect from any state, load and brace the vehicles at our own warehouse in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston or Baltimore, file the US export declaration and ship to Rijeka.
Can I ship a car I bought at a US auction to Croatia?
Yes. We collect directly from Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors yards anywhere in the United States, bring the vehicle to our warehouse and ship it to Rijeka. You never need to be in the country to buy or to ship.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the USA to Croatia?
It depends on where the vehicle sits in the States and how many vehicles share the container. Because we are the NVOCC rather than a reseller, the number is the carrier rate rather than a broker markup. Send us the vehicle and the pickup location for a firm figure.
How long does shipping from the USA to Rijeka take?
Rijeka is an Adriatic port, so routings commonly transship through a Mediterranean hub rather than running direct. That makes the sailing schedule matter as much as the loading port. We give you a concrete timeline with the quote rather than a generic range.
Can I put three or four cars in one container to Croatia?
Yes, and it is the biggest single saving on this lane. Ocean freight is charged on the container rather than per vehicle, so filling a 40ft box drops the cost per car sharply. Tell us the exact vehicles and we will confirm the loading plan.
Is there an age limit on importing a car into Croatia from the USA?
Croatia applies no maximum age to an imported used car. The real constraint is technical compliance rather than age, because an American vehicle has no EU type approval and must go through the Croatian homologation route before it can be registered.
What is homologation and does my American car need it?
Homologation is the national approval that lets a vehicle without EU whole vehicle type approval be registered. Every US-market car needs it in Croatia. The State Office for Metrology issues the approval, the Centre for Vehicles of Croatia inspects the vehicle and issues the conformity certificate, and an authorised station completes the work.
What usually has to be modified on a US car for Croatia?
Lighting is the usual item. American position lamps, indicators, brake lights, rear fog lamps, reversing lamps and reflectors are not built to European requirements, so they commonly have to be changed. Instruments, mirrors and a noise test can also come into it depending on the vehicle. Budget for it before you bid.
What is the Croatian special tax on motor vehicles?
A tax assessed from carbon dioxide emissions, the vehicle selling price, engine power in kilowatts, engine displacement and the emission standard. For a used vehicle only the residual amount is payable, reduced by how much that model has depreciated on the Croatian market. Your agent calculates it, not us.
When do I have to file the Croatian vehicle tax return?
Within fifteen days of the vehicle entering Croatia. It is filed separately at the customs office rather than being assessed on the customs declaration, and the vehicle cannot be registered until the resulting decision is marked paid. This catches out buyers who assume customs clearance finishes the job.
Are classic cars over thirty years old treated differently in Croatia?
Vehicles manufactured thirty or more years ago and classified as oldtimers under the Croatian scheme fall outside the special motor vehicle tax. The classification has to be evidenced through the recognised Croatian oldtimer body rather than simply asserted because of the build year. Confirm it with your agent before you buy.
Are American left hand drive cars suitable for Croatia?
Yes. Croatia drives on the right, so American vehicles suit the road configuration directly with no steering conversion. That removes a real cost and delay that right hand drive stock from other source markets carries.
Can I ship machinery and construction plant to Croatia?
Yes. Excavators, loaders, telehandlers and plant move on this lane. Depending on dimensions we ship containerised, on flat-rack or by heavy haulage, with dismantling and securing where the size requires it. Send the model number so we confirm dimensions rather than estimate them.
Do you carry general commercial cargo to Croatia?
Yes. Full container freight from any US origin, including building materials, industrial goods, machinery parts and trade goods. Tell us the commodity, weight and volume and we will price it the same way we price a vehicle shipment.
Can cargo landing at Rijeka move on to Bosnia, Serbia or Hungary?
Rijeka sits on three European Union core transport corridors, including the corridor linking the Western Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean, so inland movement by road and rail is normal. Your receiving agent arranges the onward leg. Tell us the final destination anyway, because it affects which port makes sense.
Can you collect a vehicle anywhere in the USA for a Croatia shipment?
Yes. Nationwide pickup and towing from any state, whether the vehicle sits at an auction yard, a dealer or a private seller. Non-runners are winched rather than driven. Distance affects the cost of collection, not whether we can do it.
Which US ports do you load from for Croatia?
Our warehouses in New Jersey, Savannah, Houston and Baltimore all serve Mediterranean sailings, with East Coast departures most common on this lane. Routings into the Adriatic usually transship, so the schedule matters as much as the loading point.
Do you handle customs clearance in Croatia?
No. Clearance is handled by a licensed customs agent in Croatia. We are the ocean carrier, we deliver to Rijeka, and we provide the documentation your agent needs. Be wary of any company claiming to clear customs in every country, because it is describing something it cannot deliver.
What US export paperwork applies on a Croatia shipment?
We handle the US side, including the filing in the Automated Export System. You provide the title or equivalent ownership document and the bill of sale. A vehicle cannot leave the United States without its title, and there is no workaround. See the AES filing guide.
What is included in your Croatia price?
Collection from the US seller, transport to our warehouse, loading and bracing, the US export filing, and the ocean freight to Rijeka. Croatian duty, VAT, the vehicle tax, homologation, port handling, your agent fee and inland delivery are paid at that end.
Why are other quotes to Croatia cheaper?
Usually because they exclude collection, loading or the export filing, or because they are broker prices that get revised once the booking becomes real. Ask what is excluded and ask who issues the bill of lading. See what actually drives the cost.
Can you hold my cars at your warehouse until I have a full container for Croatia?
Yes. We can hold vehicles while you win others, then load them together in one container. Auction yards charge daily storage and our warehouse does not work that way, so waiting for the right load usually saves money rather than costing it.
How do you secure a vehicle for the crossing to Croatia?
Loaded on its own wheels, chocked, strapped at the wheels or suspension rather than over the bodywork, and blocked so it cannot shift at sea. Where the straps attach is what separates a careful load from a damaged car.
Will I get photographs before my Croatia container is sealed?
Yes. We photograph the vehicle when it reaches our warehouse and again once it is loaded and braced, before the doors close. That record also supports a claim if anything goes wrong in transit, which is why we do it as standard.
Can I pack parts or personal effects inside a vehicle bound for Rijeka?
Only if they are declared on the export filing. Undeclared goods inside vehicles are a common cause of clearance problems in Croatia, and the consequence falls on the importer rather than on the carrier. Send us the list when you book.
Do you deliver inland in Croatia?
Our service ends at the port of discharge. Inland delivery is arranged by your clearing agent, who is already handling clearance. Tell us the final town anyway, since it decides whether Rijeka is genuinely the right port for your cargo.
How fast can you quote a Croatia shipment?
Within 24 to 48 hours in normal cases. Send the vehicle details including the VIN and where it sits in the United States. For machinery send the model number so we can confirm dimensions rather than estimating them.
What happens once I confirm a Croatia booking?
We arrange collection, bring the cargo to our warehouse, photograph it, book the container, load and brace it, file the US export declaration and send you the bill of lading. Your Croatian clearing agent takes over from the port of discharge.
Are you a licensed carrier on the Croatia lane or a middleman?
We are the NVOCC. Cassandra Logistics is a federally licensed Ocean Transportation Intermediary under FMC licence OTI No. 025125NF, legally Royal Port Container Lines, Inc. The licence number is public and verifiable with the Federal Maritime Commission before you send anyone money.
Can I ship a non-running or project car to Croatia?
Yes. Non-runners are winched onto the truck and into the container rather than driven, which is routine work. Tell us it does not run when you ask for the quote, because it changes how collection is arranged rather than whether it can happen.
Import rules change. The customs information on this page comes from official government sources and was accurate when published, but duties, age limits and eligibility requirements are set by the destination country and can change without notice. Cassandra Logistics is a licensed ocean carrier, not a customs authority or a legal adviser. We are not responsible for changes to foreign import law, or for decisions made by customs at destination. Always confirm current requirements with a licensed customs agent in the destination country before you buy a vehicle.
