We ship cars, classic and collector vehicles, used machinery and general containerised cargo from anywhere in the USA to Sweden. Nationwide collection, loading at our own warehouse, US export filing handled, and a real price back in 24 to 48 hours.

Short answer. Cars and cargo move from any US state to Sweden in a container, most often through Gothenburg or Helsingborg, with Stockholm available through the Norvik terminal at Nynashamn. Typical port to port transit from the US East Coast runs about 18 to 28 days, usually with one transshipment at a North European hub such as Rotterdam, Antwerp or Bremerhaven. A standard used car entering Sweden attracts 10 percent EU customs duty and 25 percent Swedish VAT, while a vehicle at least 30 years old that qualifies as a collectors item under CN heading 9705 pays no duty and 12 percent VAT. Sweden drives on the right, so an American left-hand-drive car suits the roads directly. Quote back in 24 to 48 hours.

Where your cargo lands

Main gateway

Gothenburg

Scandinavia's largest port and the default entry point for containers from North America. Direct rail and road links to the whole country.

Second gateway

Helsingborg

Our regular alternative in the south, well placed for Skane, Malmo and the Oresund region. We book Helsingborg frequently.

Capital region

Stockholm Norvik

The container terminal at Nynashamn, south of Stockholm, serving the capital and eastern Sweden.

Drivetrain

Left-hand drive suits

Sweden has driven on the right since 1967, so an American left-hand-drive vehicle is the correct configuration for the roads.

If you have asked about Malmo, the practical answer is that we route that cargo through Helsingborg. Malmo is served commercially as part of Copenhagen Malmo Port, but we have not been able to obtain carrier pricing into it on this trade, so Helsingborg is the port we actually book and it is close enough to make no practical difference for onward collection.

How long it takes and what it costs

Transit depends on where in the USA your vehicle starts and whether the service transships. From the US East Coast to Gothenburg, allow roughly 18 to 28 days port to port. From the Gulf or the West Coast, add one to two weeks. Almost every container service to Sweden routes through a North European hub, most often Rotterdam, Antwerp or Bremerhaven, which is normal on this lane and not a sign of a problem.

Book earlier than you think you need to. Space on the North Europe trade is tight and a vehicle that misses a sailing usually waits a week for the next one. Tell us your target arrival date and we will work back from it.

Swedish customs, duty and VAT

Customs clearance in Sweden is handled by Tullverket. For an ordinary used passenger car arriving from outside the EU, the standard treatment is 10 percent customs duty calculated on the customs value, then 25 percent Swedish VAT calculated on the value including duty and freight. That is the figure most buyers underestimate, so budget for it before you bid.

A vehicle at least 30 years old can be classified as a collectors item under CN heading 9705 if it is in its original state, is no longer in production, and is of historical interest. Goods in that category enter free of customs duty and at the reduced Swedish VAT rate of 12 percent. The classification is decided by Tullverket on the documents and the condition of the car, not by the seller, so a restoration with modern substitutions can lose it.

Two numbers decide your landed cost. Ordinary used car: 10 percent duty plus 25 percent VAT. Qualifying collectors vehicle at least 30 years old: no duty and 12 percent VAT. Confirm your classification with your Swedish customs agent before you buy, not after the car lands.

Registering an imported car in Sweden

Registration runs through Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency. An imported vehicle normally needs an origin check, called ursprungskontroll, which confirms the car's identity and history from the foreign title and documents. After that the vehicle goes for a registration inspection, registreringsbesiktning, at an approved station such as Besikta, Opus Bilprovning or Carspect.

European vehicles usually travel with a Certificate of Conformity, which makes approval straightforward. American-market cars generally do not have one, so they go through individual approval instead, where the inspector checks lighting, glazing, emissions and safety equipment against Swedish requirements. US-specification lighting is the item that most often needs attention. Budget time for this step rather than assuming the car can be driven away from the port.

Keep the original US title, the bill of sale, the bill of lading and the customs clearance paperwork together. Missing or mismatched paperwork is the single most common cause of delay at the origin check, and it is far easier to solve before the car ships than afterwards.

Classics, auction cars and general cargo

Sweden is a strong market for American classics and muscle cars, and the 30-year collectors rule is why. A car built in 1996 or earlier, kept in original condition, can qualify under CN 9705 and land with no duty and reduced VAT, which changes the arithmetic on a car that would otherwise be marginal. We ship these in containers rather than RoRo, because the vehicle is lashed inside a sealed box and never driven on or off a vessel deck.

We also ship cars bought at Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors. We collect from the auction yard anywhere in the USA, hold the vehicle at our warehouse while you buy more, and load when you are ready. Trucks, pickups, used construction machinery and general containerised cargo move on the same lane.

If you are not in the USA, that is not a problem. Most of our Sweden customers buy remotely and never see the car before it sails, which is why we photograph every vehicle at the warehouse and again before the container is sealed.

Questions about shipping to Sweden

What is the best way to ship a car from the USA to Sweden?

In a container to Gothenburg or Helsingborg, booked with the licensed carrier rather than through a broker. A container protects the vehicle from weather and handling damage, and lets two, three or four cars share one box so the freight splits between them. Cassandra Logistics is FMC-licensed under OTI No. 025125NF and issues the bill of lading in its own name. Get a price in 24 to 48 hours.

Who ships cars from the USA to Gothenburg?

We do, directly. Cassandra Logistics is a licensed US NVOCC operating under FMC OTI No. 025125NF, trading as Royal Port Container Lines, Inc. We collect anywhere in the USA, load at our own warehouse, file the US export declaration and issue the bill of lading ourselves, so you are dealing with the party that actually controls the booking rather than a reseller.

How long does it take to ship a car from the USA to Sweden?

From the US East Coast to Gothenburg, allow roughly 18 to 28 days port to port. Helsingborg typically runs a few days longer, and Stockholm Norvik longer again because there are fewer sailings. Add one to two weeks if the car starts in the Gulf states or on the West Coast. Almost all services transship at Rotterdam, Antwerp or Bremerhaven.

How much duty and VAT will I pay on a car imported into Sweden?

An ordinary used passenger car from outside the EU normally attracts 10 percent customs duty on the customs value, then 25 percent Swedish VAT on the value including duty and freight. A vehicle at least 30 years old that qualifies as a collectors item under CN heading 9705 pays no duty and 12 percent VAT instead. Confirm your classification with a Swedish customs agent before you buy.

Does the 30-year collectors rule apply to my classic in Sweden?

It can. To qualify under CN heading 9705 the vehicle must be at least 30 years old, no longer in production, in its original state, and of genuine historical interest. Tullverket decides the classification from the documents and the condition of the car, not the seller. A heavily modified or restomodded car usually fails, so the originality of the vehicle is worth protecting.

Do you ship to Malmo?

We route Malmo cargo through Helsingborg. Malmo is served commercially as part of Copenhagen Malmo Port, but we have not been able to get carrier pricing into it on this trade, so Helsingborg is the port we actually book. It is close enough that onward collection to Malmo is straightforward, and we will say so plainly on your quote.

Can you ship into Helsingborg?

Yes, regularly. Helsingborg is our usual southern gateway into Sweden and we book it often. It suits anyone collecting in Skane, Malmo or the wider Oresund region, and it is the practical alternative to Gothenburg when the sailing schedule or your delivery address makes the south easier.

Can I ship a car into Stockholm?

Yes, through the Norvik container terminal at Nynashamn, south of Stockholm. It serves the capital and eastern Sweden. There are fewer sailings than into Gothenburg, so transit tends to run a little longer and booking space needs more notice, but it saves a long inland leg if your delivery address is in the Stockholm area.

Which Swedish port should I choose?

Gothenburg if you want the widest choice of sailings and the shortest transit, Helsingborg if you are collecting in the south, and Stockholm Norvik if your address is in the capital region and you would rather not pay for inland transport. Tell us the delivery postcode and we will tell you which one works out cheaper overall.

Can you collect a vehicle anywhere in the USA for a Sweden shipment?

Yes. We arrange nationwide collection from auction yards, dealers and private sellers in any US state, and bring the vehicle to our own loading warehouse. You do not need to arrange your own transport to the port. Tell us the pickup address and the year, make and model and we will price the collection with the freight.

Can I ship a car I bought at a US auction to Sweden?

Yes. Copart, IAA, Manheim and eBay Motors vehicles are a large part of what we move on this lane. We collect from the yard, hold the car at our warehouse until the title arrives, and load when everything is in order. Tell us the lot number and the auction location and we will quote the whole move.

What if the auction has not released the title before my Sweden sailing?

We hold the vehicle at our warehouse until the title is in hand. US export rules require the original title to be presented to Customs before the vehicle may be exported, so a car cannot sail without it. This is normal and it is why we store rather than rush. We will tell you honestly whether the next sailing is realistic.

Can I put three or four cars in one container to Sweden?

Yes, and it is the cheapest way to move several vehicles. A 40ft high cube container will usually take three or four cars depending on their size, and the freight is split across them. Mixing a classic with ordinary vehicles is fine. Send us the years, makes and models and we will confirm what fits.

Can I share a Sweden container with another buyer?

Yes, where both parties are our customers and the cargo is going to the same port. One bill of lading is issued per container showing one receiver, so everyone sharing the box appears under a single consignee. Please make sure everyone sharing understands that before you book, because it cannot be split afterwards.

Is a 20ft or 40ft container better value to Sweden?

For a single car a 20ft container is usually the right box. For two or more, a 40ft high cube almost always works out cheaper per vehicle because the freight difference between the two sizes is much smaller than the difference in capacity. We will price both and show you the comparison rather than deciding for you.

Can you ship a classic car to Sweden in a sole-use container?

Yes. If you would rather your car travelled alone rather than sharing with other vehicles, we will book a container for your use only. It costs more per vehicle but nothing else is loaded alongside it and nobody else's schedule affects yours. This is the usual choice for high-value and concours cars.

How is a car secured inside a Sweden container?

The vehicle is driven or winched in, the wheels are chocked, and it is lashed to the container's securing points with straps over the tyres rather than the body or suspension. Fuel is run low and the battery is disconnected where required. We photograph the lashing before the doors are closed so you can see how your car travelled.

Will I get photos before my Sweden container is sealed?

Yes. We photograph every vehicle when it arrives at our warehouse and again inside the container before the doors are sealed, and we send them to you. That record protects both of us, because it shows the condition of the car and how it was secured at the moment it left our control.

Can you ship a car that does not run to Sweden?

Yes. A non-running vehicle is winched into the container rather than driven, which takes longer and sometimes needs a forklift, so it costs more than a runner. Tell us up front that the car does not start, and whether it rolls and steers, so we price it correctly instead of discovering it on loading day.

Can I ship parts or spares with the vehicle to Sweden?

Spares that belong to the vehicle can usually travel with it, properly boxed and declared, and they need to appear on the packing list and the customs paperwork. Loose personal items and household goods are a different matter and are not permitted in a vehicle shipment. Tell us what you want to include and we will tell you what is acceptable.

Can you ship trucks and commercial vehicles to Sweden?

Yes. Pickups, vans, light trucks and commercial vehicles all move on this lane in containers. Larger units may need a 40ft high cube or partial dismantling to fit, and heavy commercial vehicles are quoted individually. Send the dimensions and weight along with the year, make and model and we will work out the right equipment.

Can I ship construction machinery to Sweden?

Yes. We ship used construction and agricultural machinery bought at Ritchie Bros., IronPlanet, Purple Wave and similar auctions. Larger machines may need attachments removed to fit inside a container. Machinery must be cleaned of soil and plant material before it ships, because EU biosecurity rules are strict and a dirty machine can be refused at the border.

Do you carry general commercial cargo to Sweden?

Yes. Alongside vehicles we move general containerised commercial cargo on this lane. What we do not do is general groupage of unrelated small consignments from different customers. We will, however, let our own customers share a container on the same lane, which is a different thing and usually what people are actually asking about.

What is included in your Sweden price?

Collection from the seller or auction yard, loading and securing at our warehouse, the US export filing, ocean freight to the Swedish port you choose, and the bill of lading. Charges at destination, Swedish duty, VAT, clearance and inland delivery are the receiver's account. We state what is in and what is out on the quote itself, in writing.

Why are other Sweden quotes cheaper?

Usually because something has been left out. The most common omissions are collection from the seller, the US export filing, and any mention that destination charges will follow. We would rather give you a complete figure than a low one that grows later. If you have a cheaper quote, send it over and we will tell you plainly what it does and does not cover.

What costs will I face on arrival in Sweden?

Terminal handling and release charges at the port, customs clearance, the duty and VAT on the vehicle, and inland transport to your address. Registration costs with Transportstyrelsen and the inspection fee follow once the car is yours. These are the receiver's account everywhere, including Sweden, and your Swedish agent is the right person to price them.

What do I need to register an imported car in Sweden?

Transportstyrelsen requires an origin check, the ursprungskontroll, which confirms the car's identity from the foreign title and documents, followed by a registration inspection at an approved station such as Besikta, Opus Bilprovning or Carspect. American cars without a European Certificate of Conformity go through individual approval, where lighting is the item most likely to need changing.

How fast can you quote a Sweden shipment?

Normally within 24 to 48 hours. Send the pickup address or auction location, the year, make and model, and the Swedish port or delivery town. If the vehicle is non-running, oversized or a classic you want in a sole-use container, say so at the start, because those change the price and we would rather quote it right the first time.

What happens after I accept your Sweden quote?

We arrange collection, bring the vehicle to our warehouse, photograph it, and hold it until the title and paperwork are complete. We book the sailing, file the US export declaration, load and seal the container, and send you photographs and the bill of lading. You then pass the documents to your Swedish customs agent for clearance.

Are you a licensed NVOCC on the Sweden lane or a freight broker?

A licensed NVOCC. Cassandra Logistics is the trade name of Royal Port Container Lines, Inc., licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission as an Ocean Transportation Intermediary under OTI No. 025125NF. We issue our own bill of lading on this lane and hold the carrier contract ourselves, which is why we can commit to a price and a sailing rather than passing your enquiry on.

Please note. Import rules, duties and vehicle age limits change without notice and vary by country and by importer category. The information on this page is general guidance, not legal or customs advice. Confirm current requirements with a licensed customs agent in the destination country before you buy a vehicle.
